How to make the most of a small overlooked garden

Modern garden design for London

Tucked away behind a neat Georgian terrace at Highbury Corner London, N1 is a contemporary garden living space. Whilst designing this modern garden we divided the space into three distinct yet complementary sections.

Steps lead up from the house to the main contemporary limestone patio with ample room for dining in the shade of a large potted olive tree. The level steps up to a stone edged lawn surrounded by low maintenance structural planting with flowering perennials to provide seasonal interest.

Stepping stones lead through to the outdoor living room beyond. Here a central outdoor fireplaces acts a wonderful ‘live’ focal point, with a real log fire creating warmth and light in the contemporary social space. Smooth hardwood deckboards and an under-lit floating L-shaped bench led comfort and modern style. This area is enclosed by a rendered planter. Bamboo, ferns and palms soften the lines whilst creating textural interest.
