Low maintenance planting design, North London garden

Item 1 Description

We were requested to redesign the upper area of this good sized North West facing garden in North London. Our clients required a strong contemporary garden design with low maintenance planting, whilst retaining a well constructed patio to the house and side access to their neighbouring garden. The challenge was to incorporate a new design that would integrate well with the existing hard landscape materials. A beautiful mature, fig tree trained on the South West facing wall was used as inspiration to design an enclosed Mediterranean courtyard.

The surrounding brick walls were re-pointed, raised and painted white. A brick arch over the adjoining gate provides access and a focal point, drawing the eye to the garden beyond. A pair of steps lead up to the upper lawn level defined by angular planters and pathways. Arum lilies are planted in the simple formal water feature that gently bubbles creating a calm ambience near the dining area.

Continuing the Mediterranean theme, Italian cypresses were planted either side of the paved seating area in containers, with lavender planted in the sunny border. Evergreen jasmine climbs the back wall and gives structural interest and wonderful summer fragrance
